I Karamarko lobira…

Mladenka Šarić compares HDZ and SDP

27 01 2012

When Zoran Milanovic lost the election four years ago, in other words in November 2001, there were certainly those party members who wanted to lynch him due to the defeat. However, they didn’t do such thing. Using a shield of so-called ‘’anonymous’’ ones, but as a highly informed sources, they launched public critics regarding him. The critics were mostly about Milanovic being impulsive and arrogant, Milanovic being a person who doesn’t want to listen to his associates, a vengeful person who has a tendency of revenge towards people of different opinion, who does not care about party procedures prescribed by the SDP Constitution… But nobody was tempted to initiate an open war in media against him.

Nobody had ever mentioned openly that the president didn’t know what democratic process was. Nobody was warning him publicly about being responsible for the election defeat.

However, there were some ‘’steamy’’ reactions behind the scene, as in any other party after the election defeat. But public couldn’t hear about any kind of vengeful impact against him. From time to time there was a certain short episode when other anonymous source, not fond of the party boss, talked about Milanovic’s bad habits. And then we got other anonymous source close to the party boss returning the ‘’favor’’ by talking about indiscretions of the opponents. The whole situation lasted for short period of time and it didn’t have any ‘’killing’’ intensity. That is SDP. Milanovic’s opponents didn’t like him but they have always protected the party in public. If that meant not to attack Milanovic and not to deny his right to lead the party process in accordance to his vision (not vigorously at least), than they behave likewise. The recent election was a new chance for Milanovic to ‘’refresh’’ the party, to put it in other words, to get rid of some old staff. That’s how Zeljka Antunovic was removed. Davorko Vidovic has also disappeared. There was no more Tonci Vujic. And from now on they however don’t go public with their statements unless there is a chance. But if they eventually do so, they hold the SDP side and don’t deny Milanovic’s right as the party president to select some other people for his team.

In HDZ, however, there are some different people and different traditions….

HDZ has always turned disputes and antagonism into fratricidal war. The stories get intensive as they are being solved in public. That’s how it was after the election 2000 and Franjo Tudjman’s death when the party started to collapse from the inside. There was some fractions fight for the party take-over and conflicts to appear even in situations no one insane would expect to. One of those incidents for example happened when Mate Granic was supposed to be appointed for HDZ’s candidate for the state president in 2000. If he even had a chance to do something in the clash against other candidate Stipe Mesic (who was fairly incompetent then), those chances were irretrievably gone when, all of the sudden, Vladimr Seks appeared in newspapers claiming he could have been a candidate as well! The situation haven’t changed much from those days and today, when HDZ lost the election and ended up in opponents’ seats after two consecutive mandates, it is all the same.

Andrija Hebrang has decided to withdraw from his political retirement and – in order to paraphrase Ivo Sanader’s words – like Zorro the avenger initiated a public conflict with Jadranka Kosor. And others like Seks, Jadranka Kosor and Darko Milinovic also participated the game along with other anonymous sources who intensively report to media everything someone says in any corner of this political party. .. Unlike people in SDP who have saved the dignity of their party despite the intolerance they felt towards a young political leader, people in HDZ act like they completely lost a feeling of responsibility towards theirs. The streams are so unfriendly so people are asking how these people are going to continue their mutual cooperation after the party election. In our show ‘’Gledaj dalje’’ (‘’Look forward’’) Jadranka Kosor made a longing statement regarding a different behavior of people within SDP. ‘’Milanovic got rid of Zeljka Antunovic without mercy, and she still praises him’’ said the current boss of HDZ. She was obviously hurt by the way her opponents within the party treat her after the election.

HDZ’s problem is, as it seems, that after the defeat certain cognition starts to appear -people who lead the party like to think ‘’HDZ – that is me’’. There are no innocent ones in that story. Actually all party members act that way, some in public and some in discretion. Love and hate in HDZ are always more intensive than in other parties. This is a party of drama and grate intolerance, as they keep those two things unrevealed during quiet periods. And then, all of the sudden, they explode like purulent ulcers. HDZ will survive the current situation, but the question is how much compromising the party will be afterwards. But I guess every person who participate the current conflicts doesn’t care about that. They have learnt to live with discredit anyway.

HDZ MUST BECOME MORE DEMOCRATIC OR CEASE TO EXIST

Overhaul or extinction: Croatia’s HDZ faces uncertain future

25/01/2012

Ahead of its upcoming interparty election, analysts question if HDZ will be able to undergo a successful makeover and compete in Croatian politics.

The Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ), which has been the predominant force in national politics in the two decades since Croatia split from Yugoslavia, faces a struggle for leadership after steep parliamentary losses and allegations of corruption.

A month after party leader Jadranka Kosor was replaced as prime minister by Zoran Milanovic of the Social Democratic Party, five candidates have emerged to challenge Kosor for HDZ party leadership. On Monday (January 23rd), the HDZ announced that presidential elections will be May 20th at the party’s 15th general assembly.

Some candidates are calling for a party changes, while analysts say HDZ must become more democratic or cease to exist. The party lost 19 seats in last year’s parliamentary elections, getting less than 24% of the vote.

“HDZ is sick and needs to be cured. With the disappearance or weakening of the HDZ, the Croatian state is also endangered. If HDZ disappears, democracy also disappears, and the foundations of the country are threatened,” candidate Milan Kujundzic said.

Besides Kujundzic and Kosor, other candidates are Darko Milinovic, a former health minister; Tomislav Karamarko, former police chief; Domagoj Milosevic, former deputy prime minister; and Drago Prgomet, member of the HDZ Central Committee.

“The last elections and cure of the party should concern each HDZ member. Democratic changes in running the party are needed,” Prgomet told SETimes.

He added the party is looking for new blood and a change, adding that he is convinced he can be the successful new party chairman.

“I am completely willing to accept different opinions and ideas, promote decent work, personal responsibility, respect for family, respect for law, patriotism, and optimism. That’s my political program,” Prgomet said.

Denis Kuljis, a Zagreb-based writer and a founder of the Croatian newsmagazine Nacional, says HDZ is in danger of becoming marginalised. “It simply imploded with all of its problems. Not one meeting of party officials was held after the [parliamentary] elections,” Kuljis told SETimes.

Trials and investigations into HDZ corruption scandals are ongoing. According to reporting by the Croatian daily Vecernji List, the former prime minister and HDZ chief Ivo Sanader has been indicted on charges that he approved the sale of electricity to Mostar’s Aluminum power plant at lower than the market price.

In turn, the Croatian state electricity company HEP incurred damages of up to 80m euros.

Last year, the anti-corruption office USKOK issued indictments against 11 people, including HDZ as a legal entity, for illegally siphoning more than 6m euros into a party fund.

Zdravko Petak, a professor at the Faculty of Political Sciences in Zagreb, says that there is no winning political idea yet that could save the HDZ.

“The rift in the party is obvious, but it seems that still there is no strong rival for Jadranka Kosor in the elections. I think some candidates were deliberately brought to the party so they bring in more votes and by that, take away from her potential opponents, proving that party autocracy is still strong,” he said.

Petak told SETimes that it is interesting that more medical doctors are entering politics, adding that a good manager would be useful for HDZ for the time being.

“The party democratisation means that anyone can be elected and that everyone can enter politics. For now, there is no such thing in HDZ. After the election, which will certainly be critical, we will know whether HDZ will continue its political activities or become part of history,” he concluded.

Zašto usporedno s parlamentarnom instalacijom domovinskog Kim Jong-una uvaženi hrvatski zastupnici, o istom trošku, nisu i sve postojeće lisice proglasili ovlaštenim kontrolorima hrvatskih kokošinjaca?

MILINOVIĆ NIJE UTEMELJITELJ HDZ-a U LICI

Petry: Milinović govori neistinu – nije član i utemeljitelj HDZ-a

Text

As the party elections in HDZ get closer and after the president Jadranka Kosor announced her candidacy in the TV show “Gledaj dalje”, there are numerous reactions. First of all, Milinovic attacked Kosor because of the public announcement instead of the candidacy within the party. On the other hand, Andrija Hebrang said in his interview for Novi list newspaper that it was obvious that some people couldn’t work for the democratization of the party when they didn’t understand the very meaning of it.

– The only logical thing to do would be to analyze the parliamentary elections’ results, to call the party elections and then to announce the candidacy. Jadranka Kosor skipped the first two steps. Maybe some members of the board know the date of the party elections, but it means that all the other members are deprived of such information – Hebrang said.

Furthermore, Andrija Hebrang’s statement noted that “the leadership of HDZ had never discussed the program or the election lists or the coalitions.”

It seems that this very statement provoked Jadranka Kosor to react. In the statement it says that they keep the minutes of every meeting. The statement is the following:

“Since Jadranka Kosor is the president of HDZ, all the sessions of the Board have been recorded, so it is obvious that these allegations are not true. At the meeting held on the 18th of April 2011 it was concluded that we should start preparing an election program and the people in charge were chosen. The vice president of HDZ Andrija Hebrang attended the meeting as well. The main secretary of HDZ Branko Bacic, Domagoj Ivan Milosevic, Branko Vukelic, Martina Dalic, Marina Matulovic Dropulic, Djuro Popijac, Ivan Suker and all the ministers from HDZ were appointed as being in charge of the program. Until the 6th September the draft of the election program had been made. It had been coordinated all the time by all the members in charge. At the meeting held on the 6th September 2011 the main secretary reported about the work on the program. Then it was decided about the forming of Electoral College led by the main secretary Branko Bacic. All the members of the Board voted in favor of that. The vice president of HDZ Andrija Hebrang was also present at that meeting.

At the meeting held on 19th September 2011 the main secretary proposed the members of the Electoral College. Martina Dalic was appointed as the team leader for finishing the election program. The vice president Andrija Hebrang was also there. After that, the program of HDZ was presented at the Board Meeting on the 27th September 2011. After the discussion, it was accepted by all the members of the Board and sent to the Main Committee. Andrija Hebrang attended the meeting as well. The Main Committee’s meeting was held on the same day, on the 27th September 2011 and was voted in favor of. The vice president Andrija Hebrang was there as the member of the Main Committee. The work on the election program lasted for six months. It was done thoroughly and properly by all the members of the Board as well as the ministers of the government and the whole range of experts.

Concerning the election lists, the proposal was accepted at the meeting on 10th October 2011. The coordinators of election units were appointed and the vice president Andrija Hebrang attended that meeting as well.

At the meeting held on 4th November, the Board thoroughly discussed and voted in favor of the proposal according to which Jadranka Kosor is on top of all candidates’ lists. Andrija Hebrang was at the meeting, too.

On the 5th November 2011 the president of HDZ held the meeting with the presidents of county committees and it was concluded that they should deliver the proposals of candidates into the headquarters. It has been done so far.

On the 13th and 14th November there were talks with the coordinators of election units and presidents of county committees. The proposals of candidates were agreed and sent to the Board to be approved. This has also been done in all previous years before the parliamentary elections.

At the Board’s Meeting on the 14th November, the Board accepted the Decision about the approval of candidates’ lists of HDZ for the parliamentary elections 2011. All the members voted in favor of this decision. Andrija Hebrang was present at the meeting as well.

Finally, it is not true that the election results were not analyzed because that topic was on the agenda of the Board Meeting on the 5th December. The conclusion was accepted by all votes. The main office was appointed for the detailed analysis in all election units. Andrija Hebrang attended the meeting.

It is not common that the vice president of the party starts the debate through the media by stating things that are not true. It is not our intention to continue this discussion but to inform the members of HDZ about the facts and to remind that all the decisions in HDZ have been reached in a democratic way in accordance to the Statute of HDZ.”
